What’s up, Pokes!
Another tough loss for the OSU Cowboys football team as they now sit at 3-2 and have dropped out of the national rankings. This week, they play West Virginia at home for OSU’s Fall Family Weekend.
Turning the page, the men’s and women’s cross-country teams swept the Cowboy Jamboree Invitational, with the men’s team placing 1st overall and the women’s team placing 2nd overall. Cowgirl softball also dominated Central Arkansas and USAO with wins by over 10 runs. Cowgirl soccer tied both BYU and Utah in hard-fought games on Thursday and Sunday.
In the world of NIL, OSU announced a benefit concert at Boone Pickens Stadium this spring on April 12th. Cross Canadian Ragweed and Turnpike Troubadours will headline the show, with proceeds going toward OSU’s Name, Image, and Likeness efforts. Tickets will go on presale next Monday, October 7th, and on general sale on Friday, October 11th.
Everyone’s eyes were on the 17-year-old Alabama receiver Ryan Williams. During the first three quarters of the Alabama-Georgia game, it was apparent that Alabama was dominating. But not so fast, because here came the Georgia Bulldogs during the 4th quarter. They erased a 28-0 lead by Alabama in the 4th quarter. Eventually, Alabama pulled out their best receiver, the young 17-year-old who should still be in high school. In the final moments of the game, Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe lobbed it up in hopes of catching Williams for a 75-yard touchdown to put Alabama back in the lead. Alabama ended up stopping Carson Beck’s offense and beating the Bulldogs 41-34. After the game, the whole town erupted in praise for Williams’ performance. More importantly, his teammates said they would give him their NIL money to make him stay. Williams is currently ranked 84th on On3’s NIL watchlist with an estimated value of $732K. It goes to show how prestigious Alabama’s recruiting and NIL efforts are in securing top players.
In more football NIL news, Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool Sports, has pledged $1-3 million a year to help Michigan find a new quarterback. He said, “I want us to get a top-ten quarterback in the portal each year” (Sports Illustrated). Dave is said to have a net worth upwards of $100 million. One key to a team’s success is its quarterback, and Portnoy is determined to ensure his alma mater shines, just like they did last year, no matter the cost.
NIL continues to make a positive impact on athletes and communities across the country, and here at OSU, we’re excited to see how it can shape our future. If you’re a student at OSU, don’t miss out on getting involved in this movement!
